Murray Winckler, Co-Founder and Portfolio Manager at Laurium Capital

Murray Winckler is a seasoned financial professional with extensive experience in South Africa’s investment and banking sectors. As the co-founder and portfolio manager at Laurium Capital, Murray has played a pivotal role in shaping the hedge fund industry in the country. His career spans over decades, including a successful tenure at Deutsche Bank South Africa, where he held various leadership positions before launching his own venture.

Early Career and Deutsche Bank

Murray Winckler’s journey into the world of finance began with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. He later became a Chartered Accountant (SA) and a CFA Charterholder, cementing his credentials in the financial industry. His early career saw him working as a partner, strategist, and industrial analyst at Ivor Jones Roy and Co Inc., where he honed his analytical skills in the equity markets.

In 1996, Murray joined Deutsche Bank South Africa. Over the course of his 12-year career at the bank, he rose through the ranks, holding significant roles including Head of Global Markets (Debt and Equity) and Head of Research. Under his leadership, Deutsche Bank consistently achieved top ratings in research, sales, trading, and debt/equity capital markets across several surveys. His expertise and leadership led to his appointment as CEO of Deutsche Bank South Africa, a role he held for three years.

Founding Laurium Capital

In 2008, Murray and co-founder Gavin Vorwerg established Laurium Capital, just before the onset of the global financial crisis. Starting a hedge fund during such uncertain times was daunting, but Murray’s previous corporate success and strong track record provided him with a solid foundation. The initial months were particularly challenging as Laurium managed funds for personal contacts, with the team needing to balance building a track record while navigating market volatility.

Despite these challenges, Laurium Capital grew steadily, attracting more support and establishing itself as a reputable hedge fund in South Africa. Today, Laurium Capital manages a range of funds, with a focus on long-only equity strategies, providing investors with access to high-quality fund management in a dynamic environment.

The Hedge Fund Industry

Murray has been a vocal advocate for the growth of the hedge fund industry in South Africa. He believes that regulation has made local hedge fund managers more conservative and stable compared to their global counterparts. Despite the relatively small size of the industry, with R50 billion in hedge fund assets compared to R1.5 trillion in unit trust funds, South African managers have consistently outperformed many global peers. As hedge funds become more integrated into the retail space, Murray sees significant growth opportunities ahead for the industry.

Reflections on Big Corporates vs. Small Businesses

Having transitioned from a large global bank to running his own boutique fund, Murray has a unique perspective on the differences between big corporations and smaller businesses. He acknowledges the dynamism and agility that come with running a smaller company like Laurium Capital. However, he also reflects fondly on the global reach and scale of Deutsche Bank, particularly highlighting one of the most significant deals of his corporate career: underwriting a R5 billion equity block trade for MTN, the largest of its kind in South Africa.

While the bureaucracy and inefficiency of large organizations can be frustrating, Murray values the global exposure he gained during his time at Deutsche Bank, which has been invaluable in building Laurium Capital.

Personal Interests

Outside of his professional life, Murray is passionate about sports. An avid cyclist, he started cycling more than a decade ago during his time at Deutsche Bank, participating in the Argus cycle race. Although his performance has slowed over the years, he once completed the race in under three hours. Murray was also a professional squash player and was ranked 30th in the world during the 1980s, a period marked by South Africa’s international isolation.

Murray is also a committed supporter of the South African cricket team, the Proteas, enjoying the thrill of both playing and watching sports.
