From addressing hyperpigmentation and acne to developing sunscreen for people living with albinism, Palesa’s journey is a testament to her commitment to inclusivity and innovation. With a focus on empowering small businesses and equipping young scientists with technical expertise, Dipalesa Biotech Lab is not just a business but a transformative platform inspiring change in the beauty and biotech industries.

ORIGIN AND INSPIRATION

Palesa Lephallo’s entrepreneurial journey is defined by resilience, innovation, and a deep-seated passion for science. She recalls the pivotal moment that sparked her entrepreneurial journey during 2020, a year marked by uncertainty and challenges. After leaving her job to pursue a new business venture, which quickly collapsed, she found herself unemployed at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. “My business journey stems from a place of despair and later turned into a success story,” Palesa shares.

With limited job opportunities available, Palesa returned home for a brief period before making the bold decision to return to Johannesburg and explore her entrepreneurial aspirations. She reflects on how her upbringing, especially being raised by her mother in the small town of Matatiele, Eastern Cape, has deeply influenced her entrepreneurial journey. “My phenomenal mother taught me the greatest lessons on money, helped me save up, and encouraged me to see opportunities within my community,” Palesa explains. From selling small items like sweets, lip balms, and T-shirts during her school days, Palesa’s entrepreneurial spirit was nurtured early on. “Those small experiences laid the foundation for my love for business and the gratification it brings—solving problems, creating new ideas, and seeing opportunities where others don’t.”

BUSINESS OVERVIEW

Dipalesa Biotech Lab, Palesa’s brainchild, is a research and development laboratory that specializes in developing skincare products and solutions for sun sensitive skin, which includes people living with albinism and vitiligo. The company is revolutionizing the skincare landscape by offering high-quality, solution-driven products that address issues such as hyperpigmentation, acne, and conditions faced by individuals living with albinism.

“Our business seeks to become the bridge for small brands by providing technical support, quality control, and strengthening their value proposition,” says Palesa, highlighting the company’s commitment to empowering smaller businesses in the industry. Dipalesa Biotech Lab’s innovative products include eczema creams, tissue oils for dark marks and stretch marks, and a specialized sunscreen designed for oily skin. These products are designed not just for cosmetic use, but to offer practical, scientifically backed solutions for African consumers.

CHALLENGES AND OVERCOMING THEM

Every entrepreneurial journey comes with its share of challenges, and Palesa’s was no exception. One of the major hurdles she faced when starting Dipalesa Biotech Lab was managing cash flow. “I was starting from point zero,” she recalls. “Learning about financial management and creating opportunities for my business were major obstacles.” With little to no capital to begin her business, she realized the significance of being proactive and acquiring new clients, rather than waiting for people to come to her. “I had to create value for people to collaborate or partner with me,” she says.

The journey was not without moments of doubt. “Oh my God, I’ve had so many moments where I wanted to give up,” Palesa exclaims. The lonely and isolated journey of entrepreneurship makes the challenges tougher and harder to overcome. She compares the lonely journey to an analogy of a dog going on a walk alone with the leash in the mouth; no one is guiding you, the path is not fully paved, and the direction is not for certain.  “Entrepreneurship can feel like a dog going for a walk with its leash in its mouth—you’re moving forward, but you don’t know the direction, and no one is walking with you.” Despite these obstacles, her unwavering support system, including her mother and close family, kept her grounded. “My family and friends played a big role in pushing me through,” she says.

Palesa also credits business programs and incubators for their vital role in her success. “They taught me about financial management, helped me source funding, and better understand marketing. These programs helped me weather the storm,” she adds.

BUSINESS STRATEGY

Initially, Palesa bootstrapped Dipalesa Biotech Lab, relying on her savings and reinvesting profits. As the business grew, she sought external funding, including grants, to scale operations. “Building a manufacturing business is cost intensive, so securing funding and business loans have assisted in growing the business.” she explains.

Marketing the business proved to be another challenge. “I’m still new to marketing and figuring it out as I go,” Palesa admits. Her approach has been to remain authentic, using social media to showcase her passion for science and engage with customers. “It’s not an easy business to market, but it has its audience. I’m learning how to engage with them effectively,” she says.

Though her content strategy is still evolving, Palesa focuses on creating informative content that resonates with her audience “I focus on creating value, solving problems, and presenting the most authentic version of myself” she explains.

LEARNING AND GROWTH

Palesa has learned numerous valuable lessons throughout her entrepreneurial journey, particularly in the areas of financial management and mentorship. “One key lesson is the importance of financial management—seeing money as a resource to propel your business forward, not just a form of pleasure,” she explains. Mentorship has also played a critical role in shaping her business practices. “I always stay in a learner’s position, seeking guidance and knowledge from people who are far experienced and have some wise counsel to share”  Palesa says.

To stay ahead of trends in the beauty and biotech industries, Palesa’s business is deeply committed to research. “We’re invested in research, which helps us keep up with international trends,” she notes, adding that Dipalesa Biotech Lab aims to be a disruptor in the industry by always looking for innovative ways to make an impact.

BALANCING LIFE AND WORK

As an entrepreneur, balancing the demands of running a business with personal life can be challenging. “I’m still learning to manage my time effectively, but I try to prioritize my health and family,” Palesa says. She encourages other entrepreneurs to find balance by recognizing the importance of taking breaks and managing stress. “Work-life balance is crucial for long-term sustainability.”

ADVICE AND VISION

When asked what advice she would give to aspiring entrepreneurs, Palesa emphasizes the importance of resilience. “Don’t be afraid to start small and build gradually. Keep your vision clear and surround yourself with the right people,” she advises.

Looking ahead, Palesa envisions a future where Dipalesa Biotech Lab continues to grow, not only expanding its product offerings but also making a meaningful impact on the skincare industry. “In the next 5-10 years, I see Dipalesa Biotech Lab becoming a household name in Africa, leading innovation in skincare for African consumers,” she says.

REFLECTION AND IMPACT

Reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey, Palesa is proud of the positive impact her business has made. “My proudest achievement is seeing how far the business has come despite all the challenges. It’s a constant reminder that resilience pays off,” she shares.

Palesa hopes to leave a lasting legacy by empowering other small businesses and consumers alike. “I want my business to inspire others to pursue their dreams, no matter how tough the road may seem,” she concludes.

WHAT’S NEXT?

“If you could go back and do one thing differently, what would it be?” Palesa pauses thoughtfully. “I would have sought mentorship much earlier on in my journey. It would have saved me a lot of time and mistakes,” she says with a smile.

As for what’s next, Palesa is excited for the future. “We’re working on new product lines and expanding our presence in the market,” she says, eager to see what the next chapter holds for Dipalesa Biotech Lab.
