The journey to leadership is rarely a straight path. For Palehelo Nchabeng, it was a road paved with setbacks, resilience, and an unshakable belief in her ability to lead. As a Team Leader Coach in the banking sector, Palehelo’s role is about more than just managing people—it’s about mentoring, inspiring, and developing future leaders.
A Career Built on Resilience and Purpose
The Road to Leadership
For many, a college education is the first step to a successful career. But when Palehelo had to drop out due to financial struggles, she refused to let that define her future. At just 19 years old, she took on a demanding job as an admin clerk working night shifts at a hospital.
Yet, even in the early stages of her career, she saw herself as more than just an employee—she was a leader in the making.
“I applied myself strategically in every role I occupied, made my intentions to lead well known, and sought guidance from mentors,” she explains.
From there, she took on various roles, each one preparing her for leadership in unexpected ways:
Concierge and Receptionist – Mastering customer service and communication.
Office Manager – Developing organizational and administrative skills.
Banker – Gaining insight into the financial industry and business operations.
Social Media Consultant – Understanding branding, engagement, and digital communication.
Team Leader – Leading teams, managing performance, and driving results.
Each role honed different aspects of leadership, but it was mentorship and perseverance that eventually led to her current role as a Team Leader Coach.
Overcoming Challenges and Finding Purpose
Palehelo’s path to leadership was not without rejection and self-doubt.
“I got rejected more than four times in three years for leadership roles. It was discouraging, and I started questioning myself,” she admits.
Just when she considered giving up, a mentor stepped in.
“He handed me a book—Leading from Purpose by Nick Craig. Reading it reignited my belief that I was a leader, with or without a title.”
Shortly after, she secured her dream role as a Team Leader Coach, proving that setbacks are often just detours leading to something greater.
The Role of a Team Leader Coach
A Day in the Life of a Team Leader Coach
Palehelo’s day is a dynamic mix of coaching, problem-solving, and performance monitoring.
On the Call Center Floor – Supporting bankers with queries, escalations, and challenges in real time.
One-on-One Coaching – Checking in with team members to provide guidance and motivation.
Team Meetings – Huddles with other team leaders and service managers to align on goals.
Performance Monitoring – Analyzing service levels, adherence, and attendance.
Hiring and Training – Interviewing candidates and preparing presentations for business stakeholders.
Balancing Coaching and Business Results
For Palehelo, the key to balancing coaching with business performance lies in data-driven leadership.
“Knowing how to collect, interpret, and present data has helped me integrate coaching into my daily tasks while ensuring my team aligns with business goals.”
She continuously evaluates and adjusts her leadership approach, celebrating wins and learning from failures to drive continuous improvement.
What Makes a Great Leader?
According to Palehelo, there is a distinct difference between an effective leader and a great leader.
“An effective leader is results-driven,” she says. “They set clear goals, manage conflicts quickly, and develop team members to meet business objectives.”
However, a great leader goes beyond that. “A great leader is people-driven. They invest in the training, development, and well-being of their team members. They lead by example, inspire through motivation, and foster an environment of collaboration and innovation.”
Her coaching approach is rooted in being physically present for her team, providing immediate support and constant encouragement. “Private coaching and public praise have been game-changers in creating a positive and productive work environment.”
