For Nombuso, the law was not a childhood dream but a path carved out by exposure and experience. She began her academic journey with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations at the University of Johannesburg, gaining insight into governance and economic structures. However, it was her time at First National Bank—first in Business Banking’s Lending Fulfilment Department and later in Commercial Property Finance—that truly sparked her interest in corporate law. “Seeing how legal principles shape business operations was fascinating,” she shares. “For me, corporate law is not just about regulations and contracts; it’s about ensuring businesses operate effectively, ethically, and sustainably.”
While working full-time, she pursued her LLB at the University of South Africa (UNISA), balancing demanding work responsibilities with an equally rigorous academic load. Later, she completed her Master of Laws in Corporate Law, further solidifying her expertise.
A Grueling but Rewarding Path
Becoming a lawyer was not without its challenges. Studying law while working in banking meant long nights, constant deadlines, and little room for a social life. “There were moments when the pressure felt overwhelming,” she admits. “I spent countless late nights in the office, finishing assignments after long workdays. It was mentally exhausting, but it taught me resilience and discipline.”
Despite the challenges, her journey was also filled with surprises. She discovered how deeply intertwined law and finance truly are. “Legal principles don’t just regulate business—they enable it,” she explains. “They provide structure and certainty in an ever-changing economic landscape.”

One of the biggest challenges she faced was transitioning from the corporate banking sector to legal practice. While her banking experience gave her a strong understanding of financial transactions and risk management, stepping into law required a different way of thinking. “In banking, you make commercial decisions. In law, you solve legal problems,” she explains. “I had to shift my mindset from business execution to legal analysis, which was both exciting and demanding.”
To navigate this transition, she immersed herself in legal research, drafting, and procedural work, blending her business acumen with legal expertise. The biggest lesson she learned? Adaptability is key. “No professional journey is linear,” she reflects. “Every challenge is an opportunity for growth and refinement.”
The Future of Law: AI, Automation, and New Challenges
With technology reshaping industries, Nombuso believes the legal profession is no exception. AI and automation are already streamlining tasks like document review, contract analysis, and legal research, allowing lawyers to focus on strategy and client interaction. “These technologies won’t replace lawyers but will augment our capabilities, making legal services more efficient and cost-effective,” she predicts. “The challenge will be staying ahead—lawyers will need to embrace continuous learning and adapt to these new tools.”

Beyond Law: A Passion for Sports and Fitness
Outside of work, Nombuso is a huge Formula 1 and soccer fan. She spent years supporting Mercedes AMG Petronas before facing an internal dilemma when Lewis Hamilton moved to Ferrari. “I found myself torn between supporting my favorite driver in his new team and staying loyal to Mercedes,” she laughs.
Her passion for soccer runs deep, too. As a die-hard Orlando Pirates fan, she used to attend every home and derby game during her time at UJ, from Orlando Stadium to Soccer City.
When she’s not following sports, she unwinds at the gym, balancing the mental demands of law with a commitment to physical fitness.
