Mentorship in Action: How William Baloyi Inspires the Next Generation

Mentorship is a powerful tool for personal and professional growth, both for mentors and mentees. William Baloyi, a Logistics & Supply Trainee in the food and beverage manufacturing industry, exemplifies this through his dedication to helping students reach their potential. His story is a testament to the transformative power of mentorship.

The Beginning of a Mentor’s Journey

William’s journey as a mentor began during his university years, inspired by his experience as a mentee in the University of Pretoria (UP) Mentorship Programme in 2021. “I gained valuable guidance and insight during my time as a mentee. After earning my certificate, I felt inspired to give back and support others in a similar, yet even more impactful, way,” he shares.

His desire to help others culminated in him becoming a mentor in 2024. “I was fortunate to be entrusted with mentoring two outstanding final-year students. It has been as rewarding for me as I hope it has been for them.” For William, mentorship is not just about guiding others—it’s about creating a legacy of support and growth.

Building Meaningful Connections with Mentees

A successful mentorship begins with mutual respect and understanding. William emphasizes the importance of specific qualities in his mentees: “I look for respect, loyalty, commitment, good communication skills, and a willingness to learn. These traits create a foundation for trust and growth.”

Tailoring his approach to each mentee’s unique needs is central to his process. “I strive to create a safe, non-judgmental space. Building this foundation starts with understanding their goals and strategizing how best to support them.”

Addressing Challenges

William’s mentees often face challenges in crafting standout CVs, understanding employer expectations, and navigating professional networks. “Networking and time management are significant hurdles for many,” he notes. By providing practical advice and emotional support, he helps them overcome these barriers and thrive in their careers.

One standout success story is particularly memorable. “I connected one of my mentees with a job opportunity at my previous employer. She had written a well constructed CV. I only had to make a few adjustments to her CV and coaching her for the interview. She landed the job while completing her degree. It was a proud moment for both of us.”

Emotional Intelligence and Lifelong Learning

William believes emotional intelligence is key to effective mentorship. “It’s about self-awareness and empathy. For example, if a mentee misses a meeting, I don’t jump to conclusions. Instead, I give them space and seek to understand their reasons.”

He also values continuous growth as a mentor. “As much as my mentees learn from me, I make a conscious effort to learn from them. Their perspectives often broaden my understanding. If I don’t know the answer to something, I’m transparent about it and find the right resources together.”

Setting Boundaries and Managing Expectations

Maintaining professionalism while fostering openness is crucial. “I keep things informal to build rapport, but I set clear boundaries to ensure the relationship remains professional. Respecting each other’s time and culture is essential,” he explains.

Advice for Aspiring Mentors

For those considering mentorship, William offers practical advice: “Approach it with patience, compassion, and a willingness to listen. Becoming a mentee first can provide valuable insights into what makes a great mentor. Also, align your mentoring area with your expertise to offer the most relevant guidance.”

The Rewards of Mentorship

For William, the most rewarding part of mentorship is seeing the growth of his mentees. “It brings me immense joy to know that I’ve had a positive impact on their lives. Watching them become better versions of themselves is deeply fulfilling and reinforces my passion for mentoring.”
