Transitioning careers can be daunting, but with the right guidance, it can become a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Delicia Mudau, a career transition coach with a BCom Honors in Strategic Management, BCom in Human Resource Management, and a PGCE from the University of Johannesburg, is dedicated to helping individuals navigate this transformative path. Her inspiring story and insightful strategies offer a roadmap for those seeking to reinvent their careers.
From Accounting to Human Resources: A Personal Journey
“Many people struggle to navigate their career journeys, and one of the challenges is that most of us don’t know when it’s time to change and move forward,” says Delicia. Her own career path reflects this sentiment. Like many, she initially pursued a degree for financial security rather than passion.
“After matric, I chose BCom Accounting simply because I wanted to make money. To be honest, I was miserable in my first year because I didn’t like accounting, and I was failing,” she recalls. The turning point came when she switched to BCom Human Resource Management in her second year. “That’s when I knew I had found what I truly wanted. I’ve held a few HR roles, and I’ve enjoyed those positions. Although they didn’t pay as much as I wanted, I felt fulfilled, especially when I hired a candidate, knowing that their salary would help support five other people.”
Her experiences as a teacher in a township school further fueled her passion for career guidance. “Many learners struggle with subject choices. Some follow their friends, while others follow their parents’ wishes. That’s why I’ve been conducting a school career guidance program with Career Build Foundation to help learners make the right subject choices.”
This blend of personal challenges and professional experiences shaped Delicia’s mission: “I’m a career coach dedicated to helping professionals unlock their full potential. Whether they’re looking to advance in their current role or explore new opportunities, I provide tailored strategies and support to ensure their success.”
Challenges in Career Transitions and How to Overcome Them
Delicia highlights several challenges that people often face when transitioning careers:
- Fear of Starting Over: “Starting over may mean beginning from scratch with a lower salary. Fight the fear, remember why you are transitioning, and focus on the end results.”
- Skills Gaps: She emphasizes the importance of reskilling. “Take the necessary courses to gain the skills required for a new career.”
- Financial Concerns: “Create a financial plan, save money, and consider side hustles or freelance jobs.”
- Imposter Syndrome: “Shift your mindset from ‘I am not good enough’ to ‘I’m learning and growing in this role.'”
- Age-Related Biases: Build a strong portfolio to stand out, even in industries that favor younger professionals.
- Work-Life Balance: “Set realistic goals and manage your time effectively.”
The Role of Self-Reflection and Key Skills for Success
“Self-reflection during a career change is important as it helps you make informed decisions that will benefit you in the long term and lead to a fulfilling career,” Delicia advises. She recommends personality tests and celebrating small wins during transitions.
To succeed in a new career, she highlights three critical qualities:
- Self-Confidence and Self-Belief: “Learn to trust your abilities and make bold decisions.”
- Resilience and Emotional Intelligence: “Cope with setbacks and manage emotions effectively. Seek support when needed.”
- A Strong Personal Brand: “Communicate your strengths and value proposition effectively to potential employers.”
A Success Story of Courage and Determination
One of Delicia’s proudest moments as a career coach involved placing a young professional in a deputy director position in the Department of Science and Innovation. “He had never worked for a government department before, but he earned the role because I believed in him and instilled courage in him,” she shares. His confidence and commitment set him apart from other candidates.
“All we need is a chance and someone who believes in us,” he told her after securing the position.
Staying Motivated and Focused During a Career Transition
Delicia believes that understanding your “why” is crucial. “Knowing your ‘why’ will help you stay focused when making a career change. Setting SMART goals—specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound—is essential.”
Patience and self-compassion are equally important. “Be patient and compassionate with yourself. Give yourself permission to take time to learn and adapt.”
Networking: A Powerful Tool for Career Reinvention
Networking has played a pivotal role in Delicia’s journey. She recalls meeting her former boss, Carole Craggs, at church during a career guidance program. “Years later, after I lost my job at PJ Secondary School, I contacted her. She was looking for a talent partner, and I was hired on the spot.”
She encourages others to leverage networking opportunities at events, conferences, and professional groups to gain insights and connect with mentors.
Avoiding Common Mistakes in Career Transitions
Delicia identifies several pitfalls to avoid:
- Failing to address skills gaps and research new industries.
- Neglecting mentorship.
- Prioritizing short-term gains over long-term benefits.
- Sending generic resumes instead of tailoring them to the target job.
- Overlooking cultural and personality fit.
- Impatience and setting unrealistic expectations.
- Underestimating the emotional toll of career transitions.
Building a Personal Brand for Career Reinvention
Delicia advises individuals to:
- Clarify their new career direction by identifying strengths and goals.
- Develop a consistent online presence through websites, social media, and thought leadership.
- Network extensively and seek mentorship.
- Be authentic and engage with their audience to build trust and credibility.
