Awake, Yet Asleep: The Skillful Hands of Dr. Tebogo Tabane

Behind every successful surgery lies the expertise of a skilled anaesthesiologist, the unsung hero who ensures that patients are not only pain-free but also safe during complex medical procedures. Dr. Tebogo M. Tabane is one such specialist who has mastered the art and science of anaesthesia. With her extensive qualifications—MBChB (UL), DA (SA), FCA (SA), and MMed (Wits)—and years of hands-on experience, she plays a pivotal role in creating a seamless and life-saving operating room environment.

A Dream Set in Stone

From as young as she can remember, Dr. Tebogo M. Tabane knew she wanted to be a doctor. This childhood dream was shaped by her experiences with hospitals due to asthma and a rare surgery she underwent at just seven years old. “My parents had a very good friend who was a pediatrician, and I was lucky enough to have great doctors who inspired me,” she recalls. Initially drawn to pediatrics, her medical journey took unexpected turns, eventually leading her to specialize in anaesthesiology—a path that has defined her life and career.

Medical School: A Life-Altering Journey

Dr. Tabane’s time in medical school was transformative. “It was enriching, challenging, life-altering, but memorable,” she shares. She studied at a university that empowered black students and showcased specialists they could identify with. This environment not only encouraged her to aspire to greatness but also instilled a belief that she could achieve it. “Graduating there made me not only want to be a specialist but believe I can be,” she says with pride.

Falling in Love with Anaesthesiology

From a young age, Dr. Tabane knew she wanted to be a doctor. Inspired by a close family friend who was a paediatrician and her own experiences as a patient, she initially envisioned a career in paediatrics. However, during her internship, she fell in love with internal medicine, drawn to the care of elderly patients and the management of chronic illnesses.

She completed her community service in anaesthesia, earned her diploma, and even dedicated a full year to the specialty. Yet, she still felt a pull toward internal medicine. Encouraged by her mentor, she decided to explore it further, passing the primaries and attending interviews. Unfortunately, her transition wasn’t as smooth as she had hoped. The interviewers doubted her ability to manage multiple patients at once, ultimately steering her back to anaesthesia.

Disappointed but resolute, she returned to her boss, seeking guidance. It was at that moment she fully embraced her path. “Looking back, I was always an anaesthesiologist. Sometimes you just want to be sure!” she reflects.

Dr. Tabane began her specialist training in anaesthesia on September 1, 2018. From that point on, she never looked back. “The rest is history,” she says, appreciating the challenges and rewards that have come with the journey.

A Day in the Life of a Specialist

A typical day for Dr. Tabane begins with a drive to work, accompanied by her favorite music. Once at the hospital, she prepares emergency drugs, checks her equipment, and visits her patients—often after already speaking to them the night before. “Most of them like to count down from ten but rarely manage to get to five before falling into deep sleep,” she notes with a smile.

The real work begins once the patient is under anaesthesia. Dr. Tabane monitors vital signs, ensures the patient’s comfort, and maintains their safety throughout the procedure. Once the surgery is over, she ensures they wake up safely and comfortably. It’s a demanding role, but one she embraces fully.

The Rewards and Challenges

For Dr. Tabane, the most rewarding part of her job is reassuring patients and their families. “The pleasure of knowing that I have calmed someone’s nerves before surgery makes me very happy,” she says. However, the role also comes with challenges, particularly when caring for critically ill patients. “Conveying possible complications while assuring the family that all will be well can be hard,” she admits.

Breaking Misconceptions

A common misconception about anaesthesiologists is that they’re not part of the surgical team. Dr. Tabane is quick to debunk this. “We are integral to the patient’s safety and the success of the surgery,” she asserts. From pre-operative assessments to post-operative care, her role is vital.

The Moment She Knew She Made It

Dr. Tabane’s most memorable experience as an anaesthesiologist came during her first solo awake craniotomy. “The patient was fully awake while the neurosurgeon operated on their brain,” she recalls. It was a moment of pride, skill, and teamwork. “That day, I felt, ‘It’s official. I’m a specialist.’”

Balancing Work and Life

Despite her demanding career, Dr. Tabane makes time for herself. “I always plan a holiday during my birthday and make sure to have something to look forward to, even if it’s a quiet weekend at home,” she shares. This balance is crucial for maintaining her passion and well-being.

Words of Wisdom

To aspiring anaesthesiologists, Dr. Tabane offers invaluable advice: “Follow your dream. Surround yourself with mentors. Be patient. Life happens, but tables turn—one day, you’ll find yourself exactly where you dreamt.”

When she’s not in the operating room, Dr. Tabane enjoys baking, traveling, and spending time with loved ones. Her story is a testament to the power of determination and the impact of great mentors.
