The Transition from Law School to Practice

She completed her practical vocational training at a large law firm in Bloemfontein, where she was thrown into the fast-paced world of litigation. “Handling the day-to-day duties of a candidate legal practitioner alongside law school was not easy but feasible,” she recalls. Time management was a major challenge at first, as balancing work and studies left her with little time for family and friends. However, she credits her support system for keeping her motivated.
Looking back, she considers those two years of practical training as the foundation of her legal career. “It is often said that experience is the best teacher, and I agree. The journey became easier with time.” She emphasizes the importance of gaining experience across different departments, advising aspiring lawyers to embrace rotational opportunities.
Adapting to the Reality of Legal Practice
Dorka quickly learned that the theoretical knowledge from university was only a fraction of what was needed in practice. “The transition from university, which is more theoretical, compared to practice, was daunting. Missing a deadline in practice is far more serious, as it can have financial consequences or prevent a client from attaining justice.”
Every day in practice was a lesson. She developed sharper communication skills, learning how to engage effectively with clients, colleagues, public servants, and judicial officers. “The experience has equipped me with the tools necessary to be a competent and successful legal practitioner.”
Mastering the Board Exams
Like many young lawyers, Dorka faced the challenge of passing the board exams. Initially, she planned to take all four exams at once but soon realized her workload made that impractical. Instead, she split them into two per season and successfully passed all four within the required time. “I had to come to terms with the fact that I was no longer in university and there would never be ‘enough time.’”
Her study methods were simple but effective—she made detailed notes and read them aloud. “I have always been a writer and reader, so that technique worked for me.”
