Leading Change: Tumelo Singo’s Journey in Strategic Transformation

A Journey Shaped by Learning and Opportunity

Tumelo’s career did not follow a straight path—rather, it unfolded organically. She initially set out to pursue a career in Environmental Sciences, earning a Master of Science (MSc) degree. Research seemed to be her calling, but fate had other plans. “Honestly, this career found me!” she says, reflecting on her transition into the corporate world. “I started as an Engagement Lead at a fintech consulting firm, where I was first exposed to digital transformation, business analysis, and change management. I quickly realized how much I loved helping businesses adapt, innovate, and grow.”

From that moment on, Tumelo embraced the fast-paced world of business strategy, accumulating qualifications that would shape her career. Her MBA from GIBS, along with specialized certifications in AI Strategy (MIT), Business Strategy (UCT), and PROSCI Change Management, provided her with the skills to lead large-scale transformation initiatives. “If I could do it all over again, I’d have dived into AI and Agile sooner to maximize my impact earlier in my career,” she admits.

The Mindset of a Change Leader

For Tumelo, transformation is not just about technology—it’s about people. “Many people think digital transformation is just an IT project,” she explains. “But true transformation requires leadership buy-in, cultural change, and a clear business strategy aligned with return on investment. It’s about people just as much as it is about technology.”

Her leadership philosophy centers on continuous learning and relationship-building. “I’d tell my younger self to embrace learning relentlessly and build strong relationships—especially with sponsors and mentors,” she shares. “The world of digital transformation moves fast, and staying ahead means being adaptable, taking risks, and seeking out opportunities to lead—even before you feel ready.”

To succeed in her field, Tumelo believes in mastering a combination of hard and soft skills:

Hard Skills: Agile methodologies, business intelligence tools (Power BI, Tableau), business management, change management (ADKAR), and program management (PMP, SAFe).
Soft Skills: Adaptability, cross-functional leadership, cultural intelligence, strategic foresight, stakeholder engagement, self-awareness, and effective communication.

A Day in the Life of a Strategic Transformation Head

A significant part of her job involves working with Exco members to align transformation strategies with business goals. Whether overseeing multi-year change programs, implementing SaaS & PaaS solutions, or integrating AI into business processes, she thrives on the ever-changing challenges of the role.

One of the most valuable lessons she has learned? Stakeholder engagement is everything. “No matter how innovative or well-planned a transformation initiative is, if leadership and teams aren’t aligned, it won’t succeed,” she emphasizes. “Building trust, communicating value clearly, and ensuring people feel part of the journey are critical to making real change happen.”

Navigating Industry Shifts and Challenges

The rise of AI and automation has significantly impacted the way change management is approached. “We now have data-driven insights that allow us to predict adoption challenges, measure impact in real time, and tailor strategies for different stakeholders,” Tumelo explains. “AI is streamlining processes, improving risk management, and making change more proactive rather than reactive.”

Despite these advancements, leading transformation across South Africa and the broader African region comes with its challenges. “Navigating diverse regulatory environments, organizational cultures, and resistance to change has been complex,” she admits. “Agile methodologies have been a game-changer, allowing us to stay flexible and responsive.”

Yet, the rewards far outweigh the challenges. Tumelo finds deep satisfaction in witnessing transformation in action. “Seeing teams fully embrace new ways of working, watching AI-driven solutions enhance decision-making, and fostering a culture of innovation—it’s incredibly fulfilling,” she says. “I also love mentoring and empowering others to lead change.”

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Tumelo is focused on deepening her expertise in AI-driven change management and expanding her influence as a thought leader in digital transformation. “I’d love to take on more speaking engagements, contribute to industry discussions, and ultimately step into a C-suite role—perhaps as Chief Digital Officer or Group Head of Strategic Transformation for a global firm,” she shares.

But her ambitions don’t stop there. She is deeply committed to empowering the next generation of female leaders. “I am actively working to create room for the girl child in corporate, fostering diversity and advancing an inclusive digital age in Africa,” she says with passion.

Advice for Future Leaders

For those entering the field of strategic transformation, Tumelo’s advice is clear:
