As a Marketing Coordinator in the Food & Beverages industry, Nonhlanhla’s journey is a testament to determination, adaptability, and a lifelong love for advertising. In this feature, we explore her career, challenges, and insights that have shaped her success.
Building a Foundation in Marketing
Nonhlanhla’s academic achievements speak to her dedication to excelling in her field. She holds a BCom Honours in Marketing Management, a BTech in Marketing (Cum Laude), and a National Diploma in Marketing, all of which laid the groundwork for her career.
“My qualifications equipped me with essential skills in strategy, communication, and creativity,” she says. “They opened doors to exciting opportunities and gave me the confidence to take on diverse challenges in fast-paced industries like FMCG, Finance, Film & TV.”
A Childhood Dream Turned Reality
Nonhlanhla’s passion for marketing stems from her childhood fascination with advertising. Watching Generations, she was drawn to the fictional advertising agency, Ezweni Communications.
“I wanted to be in that kind of environment, creating adverts and working on campaigns,” she recalls. “TV commercials for brands like Vodacom, Lunch Bar, and Chicken Licken sparked my curiosity. I knew I wanted to be part of the creative teams behind such impactful campaigns.”
A Day in the Life of a Marketing Coordinator
Nonhlanhla’s role as a Marketing Coordinator is as dynamic as the industry itself.
“I start my day by checking emails and planning tasks,” she shares. “From creating content and sourcing images to managing our LinkedIn and Facebook communities, each day is packed with diverse responsibilities. I also spend a lot of time researching and planning events, seminars, and trade shows.”
In addition, she supports sales teams with marketing materials and analyzes campaign performance. “It’s all about staying on top of everything while ensuring our efforts align with the company’s goals,” she adds.
Behind the Scenes: The Realities of Marketing
One common misconception about marketing is that it’s all about flashy ads or social media posts. “People often underestimate the level of strategy, research, and coordination involved,” Nonhlanhla explains. “Marketing is a balance of art and science—it’s creative, but it’s also deeply rooted in data analysis and problem-solving.”
She also emphasizes the impact of trends like artificial intelligence and short-form video content on platforms like TikTok. “AI-driven tools allow for hyper-targeted strategies, while platforms like Instagram Reels are reshaping how brands connect with audiences,” she notes.
Challenges and Triumphs
Nonhlanhla acknowledges that budget constraints remain one of the biggest challenges in marketing. “Marketing is often viewed as an unnecessary expense,” she says. “It’s up to us to prove its value by demonstrating how campaigns drive sales and build brand awareness.”
Despite these challenges, Nonhlanhla finds her work deeply rewarding. “Seeing a campaign come to life and knowing it resonates with the audience is incredibly fulfilling,” she shares. “Walking into a store and seeing a product I helped launch is a ‘pinch me’ moment.”
Advice for Aspiring Marketers
For those starting out, Nonhlanhla highlights the importance of networking and mentorship. “Build meaningful relationships and learn from every opportunity,” she advises. “Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, and trust the process.”
She also stresses the importance of being teachable. “Every day is an opportunity to learn about yourself and the industry,” she says. “Research is your best friend—it sharpens your strategies and keeps you ahead of the curve.”
Looking Ahead
Nonhlanhla’s goals extend beyond her current role. “I’m eager to explore public speaking and coaching,” she reveals. “One of my key goals is to speak at marketing conferences or participate in panels.”
With her determination and passion for marketing, there’s no doubt that Nonhlanhla will continue to make her mark in the industry.
