Lineo’s academic background laid the groundwork for her career. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science from the National University of Lesotho and an Honors Degree in Advanced Mathematics of Finance from the University of Witwatersrand. While her initial focus was on financial mathematics, her career trajectory took an unexpected turn.

“I pursued the honors because I wanted to understand math’s role in financial products,” she explains. However, upon returning to Lesotho after completing her studies in South Africa, she found herself working in the banking sector—not as a financial analyst, but in a technology-driven role supporting a core banking system upgrade.

“I believe part of me being deployed in the upgrade project was mainly due to my qualification in computer science. During the project, I proved myself capable of understanding the development done, its impact on the banking processes, and how it could be changed to address our specific needs as a bank.”

Her keen eye for process optimization and system analysis naturally led her to transition into business analysis. As she delved deeper into understanding how organizations function, she realized the importance of process efficiency and decided to specialize in Business Process Engineering. Today, she holds a certificate in Advanced Business Process Design for Automation and is pursuing a Green Belt Six Sigma certification—both critical for improving operational efficiency.

Discovering Her Passion: Data-Driven Problem Solving

Lineo’s move into process engineering was not just about career progression; it was about passion.

“The saying ‘without data, it is just another opinion’ encourages me to study and implement data principles on a daily basis, even for process improvement,” she says.

Her role revolves around analyzing business processes, identifying inefficiencies, and working with teams to develop optimized workflows. Whether using data analysis, process mapping techniques, or Six Sigma methodologies, she thrives on problem-solving and process optimization.

“I enjoy challenges and working on different ideas or solutions frequently. With business process engineering or analysis, every day poses a different challenge that requires me to learn something new.”

Her curiosity and analytical mindset have made her an invaluable asset in her field.

Advice for Aspiring Professionals: Start Early, Be Inquisitive, and Take Risks

Reflecting on her journey, Lineo emphasizes the importance of early career planning.

“Start early and work hard. Get a career mentor or sponsor so they can help you navigate your career and prevent unnecessary problems.”

She encourages young professionals to pursue further education as soon as possible, explaining that life’s responsibilities can later make it difficult to prioritize learning.

She also stresses the value of networking and self-improvement:

“Grow your network by putting yourself out there, attending career-based events, webinars, and volunteering. Take the necessary risks to grow your career.”

“If I am not in meetings, I’m analyzing process flows and brainstorming with our digital transformation unit on systems or platforms that can best implement identified improvement opportunities.”

One of the biggest misconceptions about her field, she says, is the difference between a Business Analyst and a Business Process Engineer.

“BPE is responsible for ensuring efficiency and optimization of business processes, while a Business Analyst focuses on delivering software requirements aligned to process improvements. It’s a slight difference but often misunderstood.”

She also highlights AI-driven process mapping tools and robotic process automation (RPA) as some of the most significant changes happening in her industry.

“Mapping processes manually can be time-consuming, so having AI-generated process mapping tools is a game-changer. RPA has also transformed automation, making it more cost-effective and time-efficient.”

Overcoming Challenges and Finding Fulfillment

Like many professionals, Lineo has faced obstacles in her career. One of the most significant challenges was working without a direct supervisor.

“My immediate supervisor was transferred to a different unit shortly after I was appointed, leaving me adrift without guidance. It was easy to feel lost, but I realized I had to take responsibility for my career and seek out mentorship and direction.”

Despite challenges, the most rewarding part of her job is seeing a project come to life.

“Nothing beats seeing a system or solution being advertised and knowing that you played a part in its inception till the very end. It has taught me the importance of completing what I start and being resilient.”

Lessons from Setbacks and Future Aspirations

Lineo’s journey wasn’t without setbacks. Initially, not being able to apply her financial mathematics degree in her first job was frustrating. However, she learned to embrace opportunities, even in unexpected places.

“Little did I know that the environment I deemed lacking would lead me to where I am now. Opportunities are available everywhere. The key is to be open-minded and resilient.”

Looking Ahead

Lineo’s next professional goal is to become a certified Business Process Associate and eventually a certified Business Process Professional. With her strong foundation in data-driven decision-making and a passion for process improvement, she is well on her way to achieving this milestone.

“Not everything functioning is at its peak efficiency. Take the time to question, introspect, and find ways to improve processes. There will always be room for improvement.”
