Marketing is both an art and a science—requiring creativity, research, and strategic thinking to craft compelling brand narratives. Palesa Twala, a Strategy Executive at EssenceMediacom, understands this balance well. From her early days as a social media influencer to working on major campaigns, she has built a career rooted in innovation and audience engagement. But what makes her stand out is her ability to anticipate shifts in the industry and develop strategies that cut through the noise.
A Passion for Marketing Sparked in High School
Palesa’s love for marketing started in Grade 10 when she took Business Studies as a subject. “I’m a creative person and business-minded, so marketing was the perfect fit for me,” she shares. Her experience as a social media influencer in high school deepened her understanding of brand engagement, making it clear that she wanted to specialize in marketing. This led her to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing at Varsity College Sandton, where she developed skills in statistics, financial management, digital marketing, and international marketing—tools that now shape her approach as a strategist.
The Role of a Strategy Executive: Research, Insights, and Bold Decisions
Marketing strategy isn’t just about ideas—it’s about execution, backed by data and deep consumer insights. As a Strategy Executive, Palesa explains, “You have to have a mind that is willing to learn every day.” Each week, she works on briefs for different brands, researching their products, audience behaviors, and competitors. This meticulous process helps her create strategies that not only meet client objectives but also resonate with target consumers.
The Digital Edge: Identifying Opportunities and Competitor Weaknesses
In the fast-paced world of digital marketing, staying ahead of competitors is crucial. Palesa emphasizes the importance of competitor analysis, saying, “I take note of their weaknesses and strengths in the digital space, compare them with my client’s digital presence, and identify gaps for opportunities.” By leveraging this approach, she ensures that brands remain relevant, innovative, and strategically positioned in the market.
Her ability to spot trends has also been key. Long before it became mainstream, she predicted that brands would shift from using macro influencers to micro and nano influencers. “In my third year in varsity, I wrote a thesis on how brands will move away from macro influencers, and it’s interesting to see my research come to life.” This deep understanding of influencer marketing enables her to guide brands toward authentic engagement strategies that consumers trust.
Building a Legacy in the Digital Space
For brands looking to leave a lasting impact, Palesa stresses the importance of a unique digital identity. “To break through the noise, you need to be unique. Nando’s is a great example of how a brand has identified its digital identity by tapping into South African culture and posting content aligned with current affairs.” This ability to connect with audiences on a deeper level separates brands that thrive from those that struggle for relevance.
She also highlights the significance of tailored content strategies. “If your client wants to reach their audience on TikTok and Instagram, the content should be different for each platform. TikTok requires short, engaging content that aligns with trends, while Instagram is more visual and aesthetically driven.” By understanding platform-specific behaviors, brands can maximize their reach and impact.
Challenges and Triumphs in Brand Strategy
Every strategist faces challenges, and for Palesa, one of the biggest hurdles is convincing clients to take calculated risks. “Some clients only take risks after seeing their competitors do it, which then makes their brand and content not unique,” she notes. Overcoming this requires persistence, data-driven insights, and the ability to show how bold strategies can lead to success.
One of her most recent accomplishments was working on Bayer’s 2025 strategy. She identified key months for marketing where competitors were inactive, ensuring Bayer could dominate those periods. “The client listened to my recommendations and will implement them in their 2025 media strategy. Since then, they’ve wanted me to be part of every strategy and presentation,” she shares. This ability to anticipate trends and execute strategies that yield results has solidified her reputation as a trusted strategist.
Marketing in the AI Era: The Future of Strategy
The rise of AI is reshaping the marketing landscape, and Palesa sees it as a powerful tool rather than a threat. “AI is definitely taking over, and it’s important to know how to use it because it speeds up research processes.” However, while AI can assist in data collection, human creativity remains irreplaceable in crafting compelling narratives and building brand loyalty.
She also recognizes a major gap in the industry: the lack of reliable tools to measure the success of a campaign while comparing it to competitors. “For ATL marketing, we have tools that show how much brands and competitors spend on TV, radio, out-of-home, and print. But there’s still a need for better measurement tools in the digital space.”
Words of Advice: Confidence and Brand Identity
Looking back at her journey, Palesa emphasizes the importance of self-belief. “I had to learn to stop doubting myself. It’s easy to think you’re not good enough when you’re a junior, but when you believe in yourself, so will your manager and clients.”
For entrepreneurs and businesses, her advice is clear: “Find your brand’s identity and alter it to be unique and relatable to your audience while staying true to your personal values.” This blend of authenticity and strategic positioning is what creates a lasting brand legacy.
